Toddler Tooth brushing Resistance or how to get a toddler to brush? {Featuring Jack n’Jill Gift Kit}

Last week was all about parenting and I hope you were happy for me to share with you our experience. To close the “subject”, there is still something I’d love to share. Something that we had to face recently.

From birth to toddler, things go so fast. Your little one first teeth will make her appearance before you even realise that your baby is not a newborn anymore. With the first teeth starts a new journey: learn your bubba how to take care of his lovely little body and one of this first ever step is to brush their teeth.

Crazy woman pop artThe first time we introduced a toothbrush in our daughters lives, they always loved chewing on but that was when they were smaller. We hit a roadblock at some point when I started actively brushing their teeth, same things for both.

They would get so mad. But even if it is a trial, always some solutions around, just try to keep calm!

I tried different approaches hopping that it would work for us. What I have done with Baba1 and Baba2:

1. Distraction: wait until Bubba was distracted (giving her one of her favorite toy) and will then brush her teeth hoping she would get used to the feel of it in her mouth and eventually she would just let me.

2. Bath time: wait until she was in the bath. Bath time is easier as she could not run and she was too busy playing with her toys. Giving her the rinse cup to play with helped too .

3. Two toothbrushes. One she gets to use herself to brush her teeth – she mostly just sucks the water from it. The other toothbrush was for me to use.

4. Play copycat. Counting on a toddler’s natural desire to mimic adults,  brought babas into the bathroom with me to watch me every time I brushed my teeth. I made sure to lay out her toothbrush where she can reach it, hoping that at some point she would grab it and copy what I was doing.

5. Make the toothbrush a toy. I voluntary put a toothbrush in the toy box for her to play with it. Trying to give her the impression that toothbrushes are fun to use.

With Baba1 , all these tricks worked fabulously! She loves brushing her teeth and she is now 5 years old.

With Baba2, it is another story. We tried all the tricks above with no success. Baba2 who is 21 months old  has always been very independent and fights us for the toothbrush. She just wants to keep it! Even the 2 toothbrushes method failed as she wanted both!

Super Mom is here and I was not ready to give up!

We had to try new things:

1. Shewing method :We have tried to let her chew on her own toothbrush for a while before trying to finish the job but she will not let us.

2. Use my finger as a toothbrush. I tried to wrap a piece of gauze around my finger and wanted to use my finger to clean her teeth. The GREATEST/BIGGEST/HUGEST {if the latest exist in English} mistake I have ever made! Thought I will loose my finger! I am laughing just of the thought of it. She bit me so badly, I had to scream and get some help from hubby to take back my finger!

I will not try again, believe me and do not advise anyone to do/try this.

Until I had the chance to discover Jack n’ Jill!

The Jack n’ Jill Gift Kit saved my fingers! 🙂

Let me present you this Organic Brand and why I have chosen it.

I was desperately looking for a fun toothbrush to help me with Baba2 but was also looking for an eco-friendly alternative for both my daughters. After few researches, I found out Jack N’ Jill and it has been love at first sight.

Estelle Smile Green Parent

Jack N’ Jill range of products was exactly what I was looking for and even more. From an organic toothpaste to a biodegradable toothbrush with cute designs!

AustinJack N’ Jill is a natural toothpaste for babies, toddlers & children that is safe to swallow. It was first made in Melbourne, Australia in 1949 and it has been a family business for more than 20 years. It continues to be made in Australia and Jack N’ Jill is now available in more than 30 countries.

Jack N’ Jill Toothpaste is 100% safe for young children -and we know that it is important because Babas have a tendency to swallow it, rather than spit it out!

My choice went for the Dino Gift Kit.

Why a Kit? The Gift kits are really perfect to start with and grow with your child and very useful if you have 2!

We received our Dino Gift Pack* and my daughters were thrilled to open it! They absolutely loved the packaging and me too. As a Green parent I appreciate Eco-friendly packages.

What does a gift kit contain? In our case, it is a Dino one and Flavour is Banana.

  • One Jack N’ Jill  Rinse/Storage Cup

Jack N' Jill Dino Gift KitThe rinse cup is sturdy and really useful, The right size for a toddler or a pre-schooler. The Dino Character is bright enough to keep the interest of a little child. Baba2 little hands manages very well to hold the rinse cup and use it. It was all fun and she was very happy!

  • One Jack N’ Jill Natural Toothpaste Organic Flavour

I was really happy to find an organic toothpaste that was fluoride free and completely safe for children. The must of this one is the variety of flavours! With the Dino Kit, you get a Banana one. You can choose from five flavours: Blueberry, Blackcurrant, Strawberry, Raspberry and Banana.

Baba1 absolutely hates Bananas but I wanted to have the same toothpaste for my two babas or at least try before to buy another one. And you know what? We had no issue, she enjoyed it and her little sister too. Baba2 was so astonished when she realised that the toothpaste had a banana taste! It is such more natural than the other ones we have used. Our next buy will be the strawberry one as it is Baba1 predilection taste. A mix set is also available!

The size of the toothbrush is perfect for a 3 years old toddler and a 5 years pre-schooler. It was for Baba1. Easy to use, and to handle.

  • Two Jack N’ Jill Silicone Finger Brushes

Honestly, I was not really reassured to put again a finger in Baba2’s mouth, after my last attempt! Meanwhile, I really wanted to start with this one before to use a silicone toothbrush.

At my GREAT surprise and RELIEF, Baba2 found it very funny and let me brush her teeth with it! She absolutely loves when I  massage her gums with the “dimple” side. What a VICTORY for us, you cannot imagine. This little “gadget” is now part of our routine.

These Brushes are made from 100% medical/food grade silicone, and have been designed for a simple and effective start towards good oral hygiene.

They are easy to use, gentle on gums, non-toxic and BPA Free.

Double Sided: Use 'brush' side for gentle cleaning of baby's teeth. Use 'dimple' side to massage gums - great for teething gums.
Tip: Always make sure your Jack N' Jill Silicone Finger Brush is clean. Wash with warm soapy water. Safe to sterilise. Store in a clean container.
  • One Jack N’ Jill Sleepover Bag

This little sleepover bag made Baba1 so happy! She loves bags and was so excited about the characters {Jack and Jill we guess} on it. She is keeping it very carefully and ready to take it for our holidays.

  1. I’m having real trouble with my little one and teeth. 😣 He got all his teeth before 15 months and he just HATES having the back ones brushed. I hate the battle 😭
