4 Best products to heal cracked nipples and sore breasts: Breastfeeding essentials

My first week on breastfeeding has been a bit of rollercoaster. So if like me you are in an Ouuuuchhh… mood, read this!

Your baby is just born and you are starting together your beautiful and hopefully long breastfeeding journey together {at least this is what you are dreaming of} but as you begin to nurse , you are discovering that it hurts!

Do not worry! Sore nipples are a frequent complaint for breastfeeding mothers so you are not alone, and as far as I am concerned I do assume it’s an inevitable part of the nursing experience. Well, I did get sore nipples for each of my daughters, time to get on with the latch on thing.

However you must know that pain is a sign that something is not so right: You should not feel pain when baby is feeding. If you do, it means that baby may not have latched on properly.

You need to check:

  • Baby’s latch:

Usually sore nipples are a consequence of  baby not taking the nipple deeply enough into his mouth. For breastfeeding to be comfortable, the baby needs to have the entire nipple and part of the breast in his mouth, so that the nipple is near the back of his mouth where the palate is soft.

good latch

This good latch is more likely to happen if the baby latches on with his head tipped back so that his chin is pressed into the mother’s breast and his nose is away from the breast. Of course, every baby and every breast is a little different, so you may need to adjust the positioning to find what works best for both of you.

  • Baby’s position:

Cradle holdWell, this one is a bit tricky. Your body and baby’s body must be aligned which means: baby should not turn her head to feed. Baby should always lie parallel to the her mum’s body.

The cradle hold shows you how baby’s body should be. As you can see, baby’s body faces the woman body.

You have a variety of positions to help you feed baby properly.

Breastfeeding positionsTo be comfortable and ease your back, you can use a pillow under baby or a breastfeeding cushion. Breastfeeding cushions are quite expensive for what they are.

I did not buy any instead when I was pregnant of Baba2, I sew one. It is really easy to make even for a beginner. You can find a lot of tutorials online but really you just need to draw a big bean on your fabric and sew the two pieces together, then fill in.

Easy, peasy and economic!

I co-sleep for baby and my favorite position during th night feeds is this one:

Side_lying_position_PI

Just keep in mind that if you are afraid to feel asleep while feeding, you should not co-sleep!

And this picture is really funny as if you uncover yourself like this, I am afraid your second breast is going to leak all over the place and on your baby! So if I love the amazone look, I’d rather wear my nursing bra with my nursing pad on. Follow my advice: do not try this 😉

How to treat cracked nipples and sore breasts

Now, I knew all these beautiful advices but I managed to have cracked nipples. So, many thanks for the theory, the most important bit and most interesting one starts now!

Breast Milk:  One of the most famous natural tip I constantly read is to express a bit of your milk and apply it on your nipple and let’s dry. So far, did not work for me. I am not sure but never seen any relief, difference. I do it as I am desperate to heal but, sorry guys, I am not convinced.

So because it did not work, as you imagine, needed to seek for something more effective and the three products below are by far those which helped me. They are always near me: under my pillows in my bed, hidden behind some cushions on our sofa in the living room… If I could have them in smaller sizes, I will have some in my pockets and my handbag!

  1. Lansinoh HPA® Lanolin
  2. Lansinoh Thera°Pearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy
  3. 2 in 1 Double Electric Lansinoh Breastpump
  4. Green People Organic Babies Mum & Baby Rescue Balm

Lansinoh HPA® Lanolin

lansinoh lanolin

Lansinoh’s HPA® Lanolin has been developed  by Lansinoh for breastfeeding mothers to soothe and protect sore and cracked nipples.

“Sore nipples are very common during breastfeeding and can often be a result of the uncomfortable positioning of your baby at the breast. Whilst it is vital to address the cause of this, Lansinoh’s HPA Lanolin is proven to help soothe and protect sore cracked nipples.” Extract of Lansinoh website

lansinoh lanolin to treat cracked nipplesMy review : I am a great fan of this cream since Baba1. It works and I like it. It melts as soon as on the nipple and it is quite thick so you really feel protected. It is a bit sticky on baby’s mouth but it is fine.

How to use: Apply  a small bit before and after each feeds on your nipple with clean hands. My advice: put some everytime you have the occasion to do so, after your shower too.

What I like:

  • Helps soothe and protect sore, dry and cracked nipples
  • thickness
  • 100% natural
  • pure lanolin nipple cream
  • No need to remove before breastfeeding
  • No taste, colour or smell

Lansinoh Thera°Pearl® 3-in-1 Breast Therapy

lansinoh Thera°Pearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy packs

The Lansinoh Thera°Pearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy packs have been designed to be used either hot or cold to give advanced relief for a number of conditions associated with breastfeeding, and can even be used with a breast pump.

lansinoh Thera°Pearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy packs“Flexible and reusable, Thera°Pearl’s 3-in-1 Breast Therapy packs have soft covers that can be slipped comfortably inside your bra to relieve any discomfort that can be caused by some conditions associated with breastfeeding.  BPA, BPS and latex free, they are also shaped to fit around a breast pump to encourage let down and promote faster milk flow.

Thera°Pearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy packs can be heated in the microwave for a maximum of 15 seconds to provide relief for plugged ducts and mastitis.  The heat encourages milk flow which means less time pumping the breast.

To use alongside a breast pump, you just heat the pack as usual then wrap it around the outside of the pump’s funnel, securing it with the fastener.

It is recommended that Thera°Pearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy is applied for 20 minutes at a time, as per medical advice.  Once used, it can be cleaned with a mild soap, detergent or alcohol.” Extract of Lansinoh website

My review : My saviour with the Lansinoh breastpump!

Day 7 of baby’s first week has been a torment for my breasts and myself. I was in such pain that I was desperate to find anything to help: I ended with a large blue icepack on each of my breast and looking on amazon for a better product to help and I found it: The Lansinoh Thera°Pearl 3-in-1 Breast Therapy packs!

They were sent to me and WAW! It was instant relief, believe me. No more struggle to fit large rectangle ice pack on my breasts. These ones have the right shape and size! They have a cover so no more “burn” feeling and they are so soft and delicate for your already very sensitive breasts.

How to use? I mostly used them cold. I put them in the freezer and put them on before feeding and it helped. It helped to make the area “numb”, so could not feel the pain anymore.

I used them hot everytime I used the breast pump.

What I like:

  • can be used hot and cold
  • Use hot: To help relieve engorgement, plugged ducts and mastitis, and encourage milk let down
  • Use cold: To help relieve pain and swelling due to engorgement
  • Can be used with any pump to encourage let-down and reduce time spent pumping
  • stays flexible even when frozen
  • Reusable!
  • & comes with soft washable covers

2 in 1 Double Electric Lansinoh Breastpump

2 IN 1 double electric lansinoh breastpumpLansinoh’s 2-in-1 Electric Breast Pump is the ultimate choice for women who want both comfort and flexibility when they are expressing their breast milk as the lightweight design means it can be used as either a single or double electric breast pump.

But I can already say that I am in love with it and I am very grateful that I had one before I gave birth.

I will make a full review later.

OGREEN PEOPLE Newbon Hamperrganic Babies Mum & Baby Rescue Balm: This one is a real surprise! I have received this cream in the Green People Organic Babies Newborn Hamper* and did not notice this balm until I gave baby’s first bath!

On the tin it says “Rescues dry skin, soothes sore nipples and perineum”:

It is a Scent-free rescue balm for mum and baby to share.

Organic Babies Mum & Baby Rescue Balm

My review: I love lOVE LOOOOOVE it! It is a miracle and I do agree with the name “RESCUE BALM”.

It is so soft, so creamy: between oil and cream and it really soothes. I am impressed and I love the scent. It days scent free but I smell something … well and I like it so no worries. Even Baby seems to like when I use it.

How to use: Apply the Rescue Balm sparingly and as often as required. No need to rinse. Safe before, during, and after breast feeding. I do use it like the Lanolin: before and after each feeds and I feel it makes a great combination.
